Tips for SAVING MONEY on GAS. Gasprices081906
As the gas prices continue to rise at a fairly frustrating rate, I know many of you are trying to find ways to save money on your travels. While I am always encouraging all of you to save money on gas through grocery store-specific programs like Fuelperks, I felt like this would be a good time to put all of the ways you can save money in one place.

This is going to be a three part series. Today focusing on just your car and habits and then Monday check back for details on how to work the grocery gas reward programs to the max! Lastly we’ll discover whether Gas Credit Card rewards deals are worth it.
Tips For Your Car & Habits

1. If you have two cars, try to use only the most gas-efficient vehicle. Maybe even try using only one car for a while. I know for some of you it sounds ridiculous, but it actually forces you to simplify your schedule, limit the amount of places you drive to per day, and possibly gives you some good bonding time with a real person instead of the radio :)
2. Drive at a reasonable speed. Yes, people may get frustrated behind you. Yes, there may even be some honking. But, in the end, it is called the Speed Limit for a reason. Driving the limit will help you save gas. It is as simple as that. Driving at 55 mph is 15% more efficient than driving at 65 mph. That’s a pretty drastic difference.
3. Maintain your vehicle. Some basic things can go a long way. Oil changes on time, keeping your tires inflated, the air filter clean, etc. all work to keep the gas per gallon down. For more in-depth info on taking care of your car, check out an older Southern Savers post here.
4. Carry less weight. Some times it is easy to forget that you’ve actually got 10 lbs of stuff in the trunk – but an extra trip to and from the car can save you money in the long run. A heavier car = more gas used. One possibly silly option here is to also only fill up your tank to half way each time (1 gal. of gas = approx 6 lbs), and then get gas more often.
5. Fill your tank at the coolest part of the day. This one might not have quite as drastic an affect, but, if you have a choice, fill up your tank in the morning or the evening instead of noon. Gasoline is denser the cooler it is, so you will technically get more gas for less money in the cooler parts of the day.
6. Reduce drag. Having a bicycle- or luggage-rack on your roof increases the wind resistance of your car. Removing these will save quite a bit of gasoline.

Tune in next Monday for “How to use your Groceries to pay for your Gas!!”

Do you have any other tips to that are car or habit related that help save gas money?
